I recently purchased the Focal Alpha 50 studio monitors from my local Guitar Center. These speakers are awesome, and it's been 7 years since I've had actual speakers to listen on, so they are all the more awesome.
The bass was a bit heavy on these, especially sitting directly on my desk (until I can buy stands for them), so I bought a pair of Auralex MoPad XL foam acoustic isolation pads. That helped balance the frequencies and absorb some of the lower frequencies, while brightening the higher frequencies.
I'm currently relying on a low budget Lexicon Lambda USB Audio Interface, but it is working just fine with the minimal amount of gear that I currently have for making music and/or recording. Ideally, I'd rather have a MOTU or Saphire, though.
If you're on a budget, but can afford about $600 for good monitoring, then these speakers are probably the best deal that I've seen for that price range.
